A lot of users who want to buy Hosting and cloud services are often confused while choosing the server type for their use and thus in this blog, we are going to discuss dedicated servers. As per your needs, you can choose a shared server, cloud server, or dedicated server as per the performance you are looking to your project. The Shared Hosting is suitable for the initial stage, the VPS Server will optimum for you for mid-stage and for large scale business the Dedicated Server is the only way to cope up with businesses which having large traffic and don’t want to compromise on the security.

Benefits of having a dedicated server

1. No constraint on resources:

As we have discussed the main reason behind choosing the dedicated server is the resource constraint. The shared hosting is basically the divide and use strategy where resources are divided and shared among the users that’s why when there is a need to upgrade the resources then it becomes difficult to do so.

While talking about VPS (Virtual Private Servers) here the user will get a virtual server in the form of virtually dedicated resources. The main point to be considered here is that the resources are not physically dedicated resources, still, we can say that we can have dedicated resources allotted for us which will be beneficial for us. The main point of discussion regarding the disadvantage of VPS is that sometimes the hosting provider can oversell the resources thinking in mind that there is very little possibility of all the customers using their fully allotted resources but a serious problem will arise if all the users want to access the services at the same time. This will cause performance issues that will affect all other VPS on a server.

It is a standalone physical where resources are not shared In a dedicated server the user will get resources that are fully and physically allotted to that user. There is no virtual sharing of resources thus will get full control of resources and can use the server at its full capacity.

2. Full customization:

The server customization includes multiple configuration settings. It mostly consists of some of the following configurations
• E-mail server configuration (SMTP, POP, IMAP)
• Web server configuration (Apache, Nginx, IIS, etc.)
• DNS configuration
• SSH Shell configuration
• FTP
• Backup Software Configuration
• DDoS protection configuration

When we go for the dedicated server, it gives us the flexibility to customize all the available configurations as per the requirement. There is no any limitation nor any restriction on setting the server as per the user’s demand.

E-mail server configuration (SMTP, POP, IMAP):

The main purpose behind purchasing a dedicated server is for business management and e-mail marketing is the biggest reason behind it. Thus, to drive email campaigns successfully one must configure an SMTP server. Therefore, here we will be concentrating our discussion on the SMTP servers. It’s simply a computer running SMTP protocol. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.

The common email provider cannot be able to send bulk email messages or they put the restriction on a maximum number of emails to be sent per day. Also, there may be a possibility that the message can be rejected by antispam filters or ISP by considering it as a spam message.

Web server configuration (Apache, Nginx, IIS, etc.)

Dedicated servers are mostly used to host high-traffic websites, web applications, e-commerce, etc. thus it’s very important to use a web server. It is commonly used to store, process, and deliver web pages to the client. Some of the web servers’ settings are only possible with dedicated servers.

DNS configuration

DNS servers are the contact books of the internet i.e. they translate IP addresses to domain names. There are multiple options are available to choose from. Some of the famous DNS servers are
• BIND
• Power DNS
• Unbound
• Dnsmasq
• Erl-DNS

With a dedicated server, you are free to choose which server you want to use as a DNS server. A lot of different settings have to be carried out while maintaining DNS servers which is possible easily by using a dedicated server.

• SSH Shell configuration

SSH stands for Secure Socket Shell, SSH is a tool for remote login of your server. Dedicated servers are having provision to configure SSH services as per our requirement such as if we want to change the defaults port for SSH then we can change it from the sshd_config file and so on

• FTP server configuration

It is required to allow the client to upload or download or to manage the directories of files stored on a server. There are multiple FTP clients are available to choose from and should be configured properly to use wisely.

Backup Software Configuration:

While designing a backup strategy we can have two options with us. One is to choose a dedicated backup server or cloud backup server. For more information on backup, you can visit our blog. Know the differences between Backup and Screenshot.

3. Security Measures:

As we have discussed earlier the resources of a dedicated server are physically allotted to the user that means they are totally and wholly reserved for that user. This makes the point clearly that chances of interference with another user are very low, rather say chances are almost zero percent. Also, the user is free to choose the antivirus or firewall application as per the requirement. The security application configuration doesn’t have any restriction as no other user or server is sharing the resources.

4. IP or O.S. selection freedom:

The most distinct feature of a dedicated server which will not be available while using other hosting services is freedom of IP and operating system selection.

There are lots of things that depend upon the operating system. We are having multiple flavors while choosing the type of Linux. Some of the popular Linux Distribution are Red-Hat, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Mint, Kali Linux, etc. Each type is having its own pro and cons thus users can have the right of selection as per their need which is possible with a dedicated server.

Nowadays dedicated servers are preferred to host high-traffic e-commerce sites. The most common parameter while considering a commerce website is trusted because of credit card or debit card or financial transaction. The SSL certificate provides trust which requires a unique IP address to be used by the website. The dedicated server provides us with the freedom to choose unique IP addresses for the business.

5. Enhanced performance and uptime

The dedicated servers are more superior to other types of hosting services in a lot of terms due to the flexibility they are providing. The uptime of a dedicated server is also very high as resources are physically allotted to the users.

Shall we buy a dedicated server?

The answer to this question is somewhat ambiguous. Buying a dedicated server is totally depends on the situation. While we have seen all the benefits of a dedicated server we don’t have discussed its demerits which is cost. Yes, a dedicated server is the costliest than other types of hosting services. The reason is obvious as dedicated resources and CPU is allotted to the user. Now it depends on you that whether it will be affordable to you to spend such a huge amount on a server or not. If there is no issue of cost then you should definitely buy a Dedicated Server.
